E Ink Announces Turnkey ePaper Solution for Smartphone Case Applications

April 15, 2016 - Billerica, Mass. — E Ink® Holdings (8069.TW), the leading innovator of electronic ink technology in the world, today announced a 2.9" turnkey ePaper solution for smartphone protective case applications. The module is updated using an NFC signal and is completely battery less. The energy present in the phone’s NFC signal is sufficient to update the display and the bi-stability of the display maintains the image until it is updated again.

“E Ink is committed to diversifying ePaper applications. We look forward to bringing ultra-slim and environmentally friendly ePaper solutions to a wide range of consumer products,” said Simon Sun, Director of Mobile Device Business Unit of E Ink Holdings. “The turnkey solution developed by E Ink combines the display module and the electronic system so product designers can easily incorporate ePaper displays in their product applications.”

“The slim 2.9" module exemplifies the power of the Mobius technology,” said Dr. CC Tsai, CTO of E Ink Holdings. “E Ink’s ePaper is bi-stable consuming power only when the image is updated. A Mobius display which is ultra-slim, flexible and low power is the only real solution for smartphone case applications.”

The 2.9" ePaper module is ideal for developing protective cases that enable smartphones with a second display and provide additional functionality that does not drain the phone’s battery. The display can be easily embedded into the case without adding weight or thickness. Having an additional display that is always on without using power enables a completely new set of features that would not be possible without an E Ink display. The secondary display acts as an extension of the primary screen and can be used to constantly display important information such as maps, directions, bar codes, etc. The display can also enable personalized phone cases with images that can be changed at any time with any image present on your phone.

Product development cycles for protective case designers and manufacturers can be shortened since they can focus on the product mechanical design and not have to worry about the technical design issues of how to incorporate the additional display module.
