E Ink Files Patent Infringement Lawsuit Against Trekstor

November 2, 2012, Hsinchu, Taiwan – E Ink Corporation (“E Ink”), a subsidiary of E Ink Holdings (8069:TW), today announced that it had filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Trekstor GmbH, Lorsch, Germany (“Trekstor”). This lawsuit was filed in the Regional Court of Mannheim, Germany.

"We filed this case because E Ink’s intellectual property is being unfairly exploited," said Scott Liu, Chairman, E Ink Holdings Inc. "E Ink is the leader in creating valuable intellectual property in the field of electronic displays and is seeking to collaborate and build a sustainable eco-system of customers, suppliers and industry partners. Our intellectual property is one of our core assets that was built by the hard work of hundreds of scientists and engineers over many years and at the expense of hundreds of millions of dollars in R&D efforts."

E Ink states that Trekstor has infringed, and continues to do so as of the filing of this lawsuit, the following patents:

European Patent EP 1 231 500 B1, titled “electronically addressable microencapsulated ink”; and

European Patent EP 1 010 036, titled “electrophoretic displays and materials”.

The contested products are e-readers designated “Pyrus” and “4Ink”, distributed in Germany by Trekstor. The ePaper display panels found in such contested products are manufactured by a company named “Guangzhou OED Technologies Co., Ltd” based in China. In the lawsuit, E Ink seeks an injunction against the sales of Trekstor products that infringe E Ink’s patents and a declaration that TrekStor be held liable for damages.
